USA here I come...
J1 2004 is your chance to live, work and travel for up to 5 months in what is
perhaps the most diverse country in the world. Imagine a melting pot of peoples
and cultures set in some of the most spectacular scenery on this planet, and
you'll have an idea of all that's in store for you.
From hanging out with the traders on Wall Street and packing fish among the
glaciers of Alaska, to scooping ice-cream on Santa Monica and being Goofy in
Disneyworld, the best part of it all is that as a J1 participant you get to see
it all not as mere tourist but from the inside - gaining a true understanding of
the USA from living and working alongside Americans for up to 4 months. And when
you've finished working, there is still another month to escape from Alcatraz,
pay homage to heroes on Sunset Boulevard, chase roadrunners through Monument
Valley (meep! meep!), interview vampires in New Orleans, throw tea-parties in
Boston, camp out at The Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.
The J1 is quite simply an incredible experience not to be missed.
WHO can do it?
If are a full-time third-level student, not in your final year of study, and
will be aged over 18 by 24 May 2004, then this could be for you! If you have
been on a JI before and still fulfil the eligibility criteria (see opposite) you
too can go again and again!
WHAT do I need?
All you need is a work-permit (DS 2019), a visa (J1), a sponsor (CIEE),
passport, return flights, insurance, and a US Job Offer before you go. See
separate sections on all these.
Sounds complicated
We'll be straight with you: it's simply not as easy or as speedy as it used to
be. The US government have tightened up on regulations, red tape and security in
the past year. For example, now you must attend an interview at the US Embassy
and have an approved US Job offer before you depart for the US. But don't let
this put you off! Even with all of the new regulations, the J1 is still an
essential part of the college experience. This year students continued to have
the time of their lives and we have the feedback to prove it!
WHEN can I apply?
The sooner the better! Book your priority place with a deposit of 100 / UK£69
from 25 November 2003 remember, the first in line will get first choice of
flights when you return in January to pay in full.
Be Prepared
Unfortunately, USIT don't get to make any of the rules, so it is vital that you
read all the small print (including the terms & conditions on the
application form), complete all the forms carefully and be prepared for CHANGE
at any time because the US government reserves the right to change the rules and
procedures without notice It's all just part of the great adventure that J1 2004
promises to be and USIT will be there to make it as easy as possible and to
minimise the delays.
